Jim spent a lot of time researching ponds before we ever broke ground. Two years, to be exact. He wanted to make sure he
knew enough about the hobby so he wouldn't wish for something else later. He also spent a lot of time studying pumps,
electrical consumption, and other technical data to determine what would work best for his particular application. He always
knew he wanted a big pond because he wanted to keep koi, and he had a big, blank slate of a back yard to work with, as you can
see from the pictures below.
Prior to starting the dig, Jim had ordered two semi-loads of rock and installed a retaining wall behind where the new pond would
be installed. Except for some help with the waterfalls, Jim has done virtually ALL of the rock work himself. Quite an ambitious
guy!
The day we started the dig it was a tad brisk. Yes, that's ice in
the bird bath.
Jim's pond is a work in progress, and has changed dramatically
over the few short years since it's been installed. Of course,
it's still the same size - HUGE, but Jim's been working on the
rock and landscaping, so I'll post more pictures as soon as I
have some available.
And now, for the first cut . . . . . . drum roll please . . . .
It did take us more than a day to dig this pond, as we hit ground water
about 4' down. Jim later installed a drainage system with a sump pump to
keep water from building up under the liner.
The banana tree has to come in for the winter in this climate,
but makes for a nice "tropical" addition to the pond foliage.
