Lucile constructed her own pond just off her patio out of experience in Central Illinois, and leaked. She then lined the
concrete several years ago. As is common for concrete in this pond with a heavy, black pond liner. Unfortunately, because
of the shallow depth of the pond, it heated up quickly and was
constantly plagued with pea soup algae. She found that it was
more trouble to keep it cleaned out and looking good than it
was enjoyable.
Prior to any work being done, this is what the pond looked like
from the patio. As you can see, it is only about 5" deep. Even
when filled with water, the liner showed.
After all the rocks were removed and we pulled off the liner,
this is the original concrete pool Lucile had constructed.
We tried to stay consistant with the original shape of the pond,
however, we dug it to a 3' depth in order to accomodate water
lilies and help to regulate the temperature of the water.
Lucile never wanted fish, and hadn't changed her mind on that
even though she was getting a new pond, so we didn't install
any filtration. We also installed plant shelves at a 10" depth to
accomodate marginal plants in the future.
Of course the day I pictures of the completed pond, the lily
refused to open and the water had just turned green.
Figures.
This pond is situated in a 'courtyard area', protected from the
wind on three sides. Rebuilt in July of 2003, this small pond
was not designed to house fish, but if a few small goldfish were
added, they would do just fine without the benefit of a filter
debris-free.
A skimmer box
was installed
(left) to house
the pump and
help collect
leaves, however,
there is no filter
box, so the water
is pumped
through a hole cut
in the liner
behind the
waterfall rocks.
