Stefanie's pond was a rebuild from a previous failed
construction attempt. There were a number of
problems with it, most noticeably, the pond was dug
so it sloped straight to the bottom, so setting plants
in the pond was next to impossible unless you wanted
to try to prop them up with bricks. The second
obvious problem was the filter. You can see the
green barrel like apparatus near the center of the
picture with the fish sitting on top of it. A filter like
this is fine if you're filtering a small stock tank, but it
doesn't work for a pond application. First, it's ugly.
Second, it's inadequate. Third, the pump sits at the
bottom of the pond, which means it gets clogged
VERY easily, and to clean it you have to pull it out,
sometimes as often as several times a day!
We had to order a new liner because the old one was
too small for the pond once shelves were dug in it,
but I reused the old liner to create a waterfall, so it
didn't go to waste.
I started the waterfall
from up close to the
deck and down around
an existing juniper, so
that it entered the
pond from either side.
Also, because of the
size of the pond, we
didn't use a filter box,
but just a skimmer
and a new pump,
running the plumbing
from the pump up to
where the waterfall
starts and hiding it
with rocks. Her pond
stays crystal clear,
and the filter media in
the skimmer box is
quite adequate for
this particular
application.
Right you can see how
the water flows out
from under the rocks.
Ahhhhh, the good 'ol days, when people actually had to scan
photos to their computer!
