Sue's Pond

Sue dug her own pond (with a little consulting help from me and grunt work from her husband) in the summer of 2003.  Her
space was limited, so her pond is "only" 10' x 12' x 3' deep, and she decided she wanted one three times that size almost
immediately.  She loves fancy goldfish, and when I say 'love', I really mean it.  Her fish eat out of her hand, and enjoy being
'petted'.  She had one goldfish, a spectacular Panda named Andy, who would actually swim into the net, no matter which fish she
was trying to catch or how hard she tried NOT to catch Andy!
Sue was on a limited budget, so she didn't install a skimmer
or bottom drain, a fact that she regrets now.  She also
built her own filter, which is easy to maintain, but hard to
hide.  Although Sue doesn't have a bottom drain, skimmer,
or level plant shelves, there is almost no place she'd rather
be than in her pond, so the water is always crystal clear
and she is meticulous about removing leaves, debris, and
spent foliage.  I doubt you will find a more well maintained
pond anywhere.  Because Sue spends so much time in and
around her pond, her fish have become very friendly and
well fed.  She also has excellent water quality, and can
grow a fish out faster than anyone I know.  Even though
her pond is really too small for adult koi, she likes having a
"token" in the pond, and I will usually give her one or two
of her choice when they're still small.  Of course, within
about 4 months, they're too big for her pond, and I get
them back!  I need to get some pictures of her fish to show
you.  Or maybe I could sneak over some warm, summer day
and take some myself without her knowing.  Oh wait, she's
always IN her pond, so I guess it wouldn't be a secret since
I'd have to ask her to move!
Every year, Sue tells me we're going to move the pond and
make it bigger and deeper, but one the plants come in, it
just looks to darn good to dismantle.
